New subscribers without an existing line are not eligible and must choose the 15 Pro at 84,700 yen [[1]](https://note.com/sam_toushibu/n/nf86e21b1b285?hl=en). The same split appears in the storage tiers. The 15 Pro Max 256GB requires a carrier switch (MNP), while the 15 Pro 128GB can be bought at its listed price with a new contract [[1]](https://note.com/sam_toushibu/n/nf86e21b1b285?hl=en). ## Stock and the Rakuten Mobile offer The iPhone 16 is out of stock at Rakuten Mobile and IIJmio [[1]](https://note.com/sam_toushibu/n/nf86e21b1b285?hl=en). Rakuten Mobile offers the latest iPhone 17 for 999 yen a month [[1]](https://note.com/sam_toushibu/n/nf86e21b1b285?hl=en). Rakuten Mobile charges no administrative fees and includes domestic calls that are unlimited and free [[1]](https://note.com/sam_toushibu/n/nf86e21b1b285?hl=en). With an unlimited calling plan of around 980 yen, the article says the total monthly cost for the device and service at Rakuten Mobile is under 2,000 yen [[1]](https://note.com/sam_toushibu/n/nf86e21b1b285?hl=en). Rakuten Mobile subscribers receive 50GB of Rakuten Drive for free [[1]](https://note.com/sam_toushibu/n/nf86e21b1b285?hl=en). Combined with Rakuten Bank, ordinary savings earn a 0.74% interest rate [[1]](https://note.com/sam_toushibu/n/nf86e21b1b285?hl=en). ## Apple's own prices and lineup Buying an iPhone 17 from the official Apple store costs nearly 160,000 yen [[1]](https://note.com/sam_toushibu/n/nf86e21b1b285?hl=en). In the article's US listing, the iPhone 17 is priced at $899 [[2]](https://www.wired.com/gallery/iphone-buying-guide/). Apple sells seven iPhone models, from the $699 iPhone 17e to the $1,999 iPhone Duo [[2]](https://www.wired.com/gallery/iphone-buying-guide/). Apple just released its flagship models, and Apple has not yet released the more affordable iPhone 18 models [[2]](https://www.wired.com/gallery/iphone-buying-guide/). Those models are not expected until spring 2027 [[2]](https://www.wired.com/gallery/iphone-buying-guide/). ## Features and buying terms Apple Intelligence is available on the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max and newer, including the iPhone 16e [[2]](https://www.wired.com/gallery/iphone-buying-guide/). It rolled out in iOS 18.1 [[2]](https://www.wired.com/gallery/iphone-buying-guide/). In iOS 27, Apple added a revamped, conversational Siri AI assistant [[2]](https://www.wired.com/gallery/iphone-buying-guide/). In the US, Apple has not included a SIM tray since the iPhone 14 released in 2022 [[2]](https://www.wired.com/gallery/iphone-buying-guide/). Most people in the US buy iPhones from carriers, which means the devices are locked to that network [[2]](https://www.wired.com/gallery/iphone-buying-guide/). Buyers who purchase directly from Apple can use a leasing option called Apple Upgrade [[2]](https://www.wired.com/gallery/iphone-buying-guide/). AppleCare is not included with Apple Upgrade, as it was not included with the discontinued iPhone Upgrade Program [[2]](https://www.wired.com/gallery/iphone-buying-guide/). ## What this means for you If you are looking at the iPhone 13, expect to pay 25,630 yen at mass retailers or 33,000 yen depending on the chain [[1]](https://note.com/sam_toushibu/n/nf86e21b1b285?hl=en). If you want an iPhone 16, check stock first, because it is out of stock at Rakuten Mobile and IIJmio [[1]](https://note.com/sam_toushibu/n/nf86e21b1b285?hl=en).
