[[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) The original date was for PlayStation 5, and the game is a PS5 exclusive. [[3]](https://www.theverge.com/games/1026448/sony-playstation-god-of-war-laufey-delay) [[2]](https://www.polygon.com/god-of-war-laufey-delayed-ps5-2027/) ## What the studio said The delay was announced in a social media post, a statement that Sony Santa Monica published on X. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) [[2]](https://www.polygon.com/god-of-war-laufey-delayed-ps5-2027/) The studio said it will use the extra time to push the game to its fullest potential. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) It also said it will put in the finishing touches during that period before release. [[4]](https://kotaku.com/god-of-war-laufey-delay-ps5-new-release-date-santa-monica-2000753374) The studio added that it has been grateful for the excitement around the game since its June reveal. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) It said it does not take for granted the trust placed in it by fans. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) ## Who Faye is and where the game sits Laufey stars Faye, whose death just before the opening of God of War (2018) kickstarts the story of that game. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) Faye was first introduced in that game, which begins with her funeral, and players first met her in 2022's God of War Ragnarök, where Deborah Ann Woll first portrayed her. [[2]](https://www.polygon.com/god-of-war-laufey-delayed-ps5-2027/) In Laufey, Faye reawakens in the afterlife and undertakes her own adventure. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) That adventure runs parallel with the exploits of Kratos and Atreus in God of War and God of War Ragnarök. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) The game takes place in the Everywhen, an afterlife for the gods, where Faye tries to help Kratos and Atreus from beyond the grave. [[2]](https://www.polygon.com/god-of-war-laufey-delayed-ps5-2027/) It runs concurrently with the 2018 soft reboot and its sequel. [[2]](https://www.polygon.com/god-of-war-laufey-delayed-ps5-2027/) ## Cast and combat Woll stars in the titular role of Laufey as Faye. [[2]](https://www.polygon.com/god-of-war-laufey-delayed-ps5-2027/) Jack Quaid voices Phranque (a talking cube), Perlina Lau plays Rue, and Christopher Judge returns as Kratos. [[2]](https://www.polygon.com/god-of-war-laufey-delayed-ps5-2027/) Faye's combat is more acrobatic and evokes Devil May Cry. [[2]](https://www.polygon.com/god-of-war-laufey-delayed-ps5-2027/) A 23-minute gameplay reveal showed a game that plays differently from recent God of War games, with more focus on acrobatic action. [[3]](https://www.theverge.com/games/1026448/sony-playstation-god-of-war-laufey-delay) The game was officially unveiled during the June State of Play showcase after months of rumors and speculation. [[4]](https://kotaku.com/god-of-war-laufey-delay-ps5-new-release-date-santa-monica-2000753374) ## Why the new date helps Sony's calendar The delay gives the game room away from a busy slate of releases at the beginning of next year. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) One of those releases is Sony's Until Dawn 2, which is out on January 28, 2027. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) The move also ensures Sony will have at least one first-party game out in the spring quarter of 2027. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) ## What it means for you If you planned to play Laufey on PS5 in February, the date to note is now May 20, 2027. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) [[2]](https://www.polygon.com/god-of-war-laufey-delayed-ps5-2027/) The studio said the extra time goes toward reaching the game's fullest potential and adding finishing touches. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) [[4]](https://kotaku.com/god-of-war-laufey-delay-ps5-new-release-date-santa-monica-2000753374) If you want something from Sony earlier in the year, Until Dawn 2 is out on January 28, 2027. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2306802/god-of-war-laufey-is-delayed-until-may-20/) Santa Monica Studio has also confirmed that another Kratos-led game is in development and will directly tie into the events of Laufey. [[4]](https://kotaku.com/god-of-war-laufey-delay-ps5-new-release-date-santa-monica-2000753374) Outside games, Amazon is developing a live-action adaptation of the 2018 soft reboot, with Dave Bautista set to star as Kratos.
