What happened

Conductor has halted new sign-ups and downloads, and its Pro subscribers now get their paid features free. [1] The change follows Meta's acquisition of the startup in a deal first reported by Axios. [1]

Meta confirmed the deal but did not disclose how much it paid. [2] Conductor's founder and CEO Charlie Holtz announced the news on the company's blog on November 4, 2026. [2]

Holtz announced on X that Conductor is joining Meta, saying he has big plans for the next interface and that something new will arrive by early next year. [3] He said he is keen to work with Meta's chief AI officer Alexandr Wang and with Nat Friedman, who leads product at Meta Superintelligence Labs. [2]

A young company with a large user base

Conductor was founded in 2024 by CEO Charlie Holtz and CTO Jackson de Campos, formally as Melty Inc. [1] It launched its core product only in the summer before the deal. [3]

Conductor says on its website that more than 100,000 people use it. [1] When it announced its Series A in March, it named Meta, Google and Spotify among companies with dozens of engineers using the product. [1]

That Series A was $22 million, raised from Spark Capital and Matrix. [1] Conductor does not build its own AI models and instead uses models from firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic. [2]

Why Meta wants it

According to people familiar with the deal, Meta expects the Conductor team's speed at shipping products to help it build its next generation of AI coding tools. [1]

Meta had previously lagged behind in AI services and has spent recent months trying to catch up. [3] In August 2026, it launched its own coding agent, called Muse Code. [2] Meta says its Muse agents now have more than 10 million users. [2]

On October 15, Meta released Muse Spark Open, an open-weights version of its Muse Spark model aimed at coding and long-running agent work. [1] Over the past year, Meta has also bought other AI firms, including the agent platform Moltbook. [2]

Holtz said the Conductor deal landed the same day OpenAI said it plans to acquire developer tools startup Pierre Computer. [1]

What it means for Conductor users

If you use Conductor, its core features will keep working as they previously have until early next year. [3] If you are a Pro subscriber, your paid features are now free. [1]

Before the cloud shutdown, you can export your data or move cloud workspaces onto your own machines, and active subscribers will get refunds. [1] Local copies of the Mac app keep working until early 2027, when the team expects to release a new interface it has not yet described. [1]

The company says it has never sold Conductor user data or trained models on it, and does not plan to. [1]
