## What Sony confirmed

Sony officially confirmed on Oct 22, 2026 that it was discontinuing its last 4K Blu-ray player, which affects anyone who wants a standalone machine for Ultra HD discs from the company. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2300289/playstation-5-might-be-sony-final-blu-ray-player/) Sony announced that it no longer intends to sell standalone Ultra HD/4K Blu-ray players, at least in Japan. [[2]](https://www.avclub.com/sony-discontinues-4k-blu-ray-players)

The player is the UBP-X700/K, released in spring 2025. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2300289/playstation-5-might-be-sony-final-blu-ray-player/) It was the company's final standalone UHD player on the market. ## The player and what remains

Sony's Japan webstore lists the UBP-X700/K as out of stock, with a note that it will not be restocked. [[3]](https://gizmodo.com/sony-blu-ray-player-discontinued-2000829662) Sony had positioned the player as its last budget device for 4K discs. Sony will continue to sell one non-UHD Blu-ray player and one DVD player. [[2]](https://www.avclub.com/sony-discontinues-4k-blu-ray-players)

## A string of exits from physical media

The player news comes about a year after Sony announced it was giving up on the rewritable Blu-ray format. [[2]](https://www.avclub.com/sony-discontinues-4k-blu-ray-players) It also arrives three months after Sony announced it was giving up on physical discs for its video games. [[2]](https://www.avclub.com/sony-discontinues-4k-blu-ray-players)

Sony also told Bloomberg it will not attend CES 2027. [[3]](https://gizmodo.com/sony-blu-ray-player-discontinued-2000829662)

## Who is left making players

Sony is not the first big name to leave. LG stopped production of its Blu-ray players in December 2024, [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2300289/playstation-5-might-be-sony-final-blu-ray-player/) and Samsung pulled out of the Blu-ray market in 2019. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2300289/playstation-5-might-be-sony-final-blu-ray-player/)

That leaves Panasonic as the last major manufacturer that has not abandoned Blu-ray. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2300289/playstation-5-might-be-sony-final-blu-ray-player/) Panasonic is described as the only major electronics brand still seriously invested in it. [[2]](https://www.avclub.com/sony-discontinues-4k-blu-ray-players)

In September, Panasonic released the DMR-4X1010 player, which doubles as a 4K broadcast tuner and is currently exclusive to Japan. [[3]](https://gizmodo.com/sony-blu-ray-player-discontinued-2000829662) At the high end, Magnetar Audio wants $12,000 for its new Magnetar Ultima reference disc player. ## What it means for you

If you want a standalone 4K Blu-ray player from Sony, the UBP-X700/K was the last one, and the Japan webstore will not restock it. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2300289/playstation-5-might-be-sony-final-blu-ray-player/) [[3]](https://gizmodo.com/sony-blu-ray-player-discontinued-2000829662) Some commentators see the Japan discontinuation as a likely prelude to a similar move in non-Japanese markets. [[2]](https://www.avclub.com/sony-discontinues-4k-blu-ray-players)

If you plan to play 4K discs on a PS5 instead, Gizmodo notes that a PS5 is not as fully featured as a standalone player. [[2]](https://www.avclub.com/sony-discontinues-4k-blu-ray-players) The PS5 cannot handle Dolby Vision in 4K movies that support the format. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2300289/playstation-5-might-be-sony-final-blu-ray-player/)

Existing PS5 discs will continue to work, but games released after the cutoff will not see a physical release. [[1]](https://www.engadget.com/2300289/playstation-5-might-be-sony-final-blu-ray-player/)
